There’s already Oscar buzz for Dame Judy Dench and her performance in ‘Philomena,’ and when you watch this trailer below, you’ll know why.
The film is being touted as a comedy, but it’s a lot more than that, with lots of touching, dramatic moments that are sure to bring a tear to many an eye. Speaking to the BBC Dame Judi said:
“I feel a huge responsibility because people know her and therefore they will look at the film and want to recognise Philomena in me.
“And I hope they do…A friend said I can’t see a vestige of you in the film and I said ‘you couldn’t have paid me a bigger compliment.’ I like nothing better than to be told that.”
Below is a newly released clip, starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, where Judi’s character, Philomena discovers that her long-lost son was gay…
Directed by Stephen Frears, The Weinstein Company will release in select theaters in the USA on November 22nd before expanding nationwide on November 27th. The film has already been released in the UK (November 1st).
Based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee,’ The film ‘Philomena’ focuses on the efforts of Philomena Lee (Judi Dench) who was the mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock (something her Irish-Catholic community didn’t have the highest opinion of), and given away for adoption in the United States.
In following church doctrine, she was forced to sign a contract that wouldn’t allow for any sort of inquiry into the son’s whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Philomena meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son.
