The Wrecking Ball-riding, tongue-wagging pop sensation Miley Cyrus kicked off her Bangerz World Tour on Valentine’s Day here in Vancouver, and I got a chance to see her twerk up a storm on stage at Rogers Arena. So does Miley’s Bangerz tour deserve your dollars, or is it an abysmal display of dumb that deserves to be dumped? Read on!

The Good: Focusing on her latest album, Bangerz, plus a few other gems like “Can’t Be Tamed” and “Party in the USA”, Cyrus pulls out all the stops in this show, and she’s definitely not afraid to show it. From making a brilliant entrance down a long tongue-shaped slide, to writhing on a blinged-out gold truck with spinning rims and later riding a flying hot dog, this is definitely one bizarre, yet utterly delightful visual feast. But amongst all the weird razzle-dazzle, her vocals reign supreme, and Cyrus demonstrates with skill and confidence that she is a pop force to be reckoned with.

The Gay: Whoa, this show is racy. Like the “18+ Parental Advisory” sticker kind of racy. There’s a whole lot of crotch grabbing, writhing, and twerking tossed around. Even her backup dancers, mostly female, take turns in grinding up all over Miley. The video screens showed a lot of drug references and sex paraphernalia, and one black and white video sequence shows Cyrus in black bondage gear with a lot of rubber and black tape splayed across her nipples. Parents, leave your kids at home; this is NOT a kid-friendly show. Also, this show celebrates diversity of the audience; when Miley crooned her latest single ‘Adore You’, the jumbotron flashed to many different kinds of couples in the audience, many of them same-sex, making out and showing their love for each other. How fitting for Valentine’s Day!
The Bad: Well, a lot of the crazy crotch-writhing twerk antics may rub some Miley fans the wrong way (pun intended), but overall this show is a solid spectacle of vocals and theatrics. The low point was when Cyrus lead an acoustic, down-tempo cover of Outkast’s “Hey Ya” which felt tired. Things did pick up though when she followed that misstep with Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”, which she knocked out of the park. And long-time Miley fans will be disappointed that she doesn’t cover many of her past hits. This is purely a spectacle for the new, twerktacular Miley, and quite frankly, we’re better off with this version.
The Fugly: Although her physique looked amazing, some of those costumes looked like Cyrus robbed a couple dozen drag queens and sported their looks. Talk about feathers and faux fur galore! And those animations, although artistically brilliant, were just plain weird! It was like we were experiencing one of Miley’s bad drug trips after smoking up some bad weed from the wrong part of town.
Miley: Bangerz or Bust?: I have to say it, but the Bangerz tour is the must-see tour of 2014. The bizarre, bombast show coupled with Miley’s killer vocals and banging bod is worth every dollar. And since Cyrus does this show with an entire sense of fun with sheer talent to back it up, it doesn’t reek of someone trying so hard to get your attention like some other recent pop mega-tours (I’m looking at you, Gaga!). Throw your money at Miley’s Bangerz tour like you’re at a strip club and don’t miss this craycray show when it hits your town!
